Gli Univers Zero suonano una
sorta di fusion jazz da camera, raffinata e drammatica, per violini,
harmonium, organo e fagotto. Ne fa fede sopratutto la Ronde
sull'album d'esordio, 1313
(1978), quando erano in sette e il loro sound si ispirava ai King
Crimson di Moonchild.
Daniel Denis è il compositore più eccentrico ed esuberante
dell'avanguardia europea, capace di alternare una marcetta militare a
una fanfara "zappiana", una filastrocca alla Lindsay Cooper
a un ritmo "industriale", un pizzicato alla Berlioz a una
danza popolare. Michael Berckmans al bassoon arabesca le loro moderne
"ronde" con tutta una serie di geniali clownerie. Mel pezzo
più minimalista, la sarabanda a passo orientale di Malaise,
dominano invece gli archi e il clavicembalo.
Lo stile attinge al gotico più orrifico in Heresie
(1980) e lambisce l'effettismo nei successivi Ceux
Du Dehors (1982), con le
incalzanti progressioni jazz-rock di Dense
e la nervosa pièce Combat,
e Uzed
(1984), fino al manierismo di Heatwave
(1987), disco orchestrato per un ensemble più moderno (due tastiere
elettroniche, archi, fiati, chitarra, basso, batteria) e ricco di
sintetici tour de force (Chinavox,
Funeral Plain).
Meno austeri degli Art Zoyd, gli Univers Zero sono reminescenti del
rock progressivo e dell'art-rock inglesi, ma non meno audaci nel
tentare la fusione fra avanguardia "seria" e rock.
Se gli Art Zoyd sono i Satie del Rock, gli Univers Zero ne sono i
Polene.
